Jai Gangaajal Movie Review: Priyanka Chopra Shines In This Cop-Society Relationship Drama

Rating: 3.0/5
Genre: Action Drama
Director: Prakash Jha
Runtime: 2hr 38min
Sequel to the Prakash Jha’s 2003 film ‘Gangaajal’ starring Ajay Devgn is out in the theaters with an all-new spirit. The film ‘Jai Gangaajal’ is special from its prequel in a lot many ways. First of all the desi girl Priyanka Chopra has replaced the ‘singham’ Ajay Devgn. PeeCee in the role of hard-hitting IPS officer Abha Mathur, gives a glimpse of her new de-glam avatar. Also, Jha himself is playing the character of corrupt cop Bhola Nath Singh.
The film starts with the introduction of the star cast including Prakash Jha as B. N. Singh and Priyanka Chopra as IPS officer Abha Mathur coupled with the brother duos Babloo Pandey (Manav Kaul) and Dablu Pandey (Ninad Kamat) and Munna Mardani (Murli Sharma). The story moves further in Prakash Jha’s signature style: lady officer Abha Mathur is transferred to district Bankipur and there she observes that the law has been sold to local netas and as a result society is facing rapes, farmers’ suicides and lot many problems on daily basis. The twist in the tale happens when a corporate giant decides to set up a thermal power plant and offers two fold prices to the residents on behalf on their lands. All but one lady refuses to surrender her land for the plant and this infuses the further plot filled with rape, killing and hatred under heavy political upheaval.
When comes to the performances, its PeeCee (now internationally acclaimed actress) who takes away all the credit. Her on-screen presence fills the ambience of theatre with a variety of moods making it a perfect combination of bold and beautiful. Moreover, with another action flick in her hands (we have already lured her in Don and Don 2), she proves herself just perfect to action genre. Her teaser dialogues include the one like:
Khakee ka rang agar sahi ho to, usse aurat pehne ya mard, tum jaise namardo ko chutki me uski aukat dikha deti hai
Prakash Jha as an actor bends himself too much and too hard to give a fine performance. Manav Kaul as Babloo Pandey is just perfect (seems that he is born to play evil roles) and fits best into the skin of his character. Remaining star cast, such as, Murli Sharma, Rahul Bhatt and Ninad Kamat help the story to move on further.
Although, the film’s music (Salim and Suleiman Merchant) doesn’t work with the plot, it’s the background score that plays in rhythm with the narrative. Much work could have been done to chop the unworthy scenes and reduce the film’s length.
All-in-all the film comes with a perfect timing and inspiring story (of course, the lady officer empowers the role of women in our society) to pull the crowd into theatres.
