15th is celebrated as Engineer’s day every year in memory of Sir
Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, a prominent engineer of India and also a recipient
of the Indian Republic’s highest honour, the Bharat Ratna.
Let’s
pay tribute to this important day in Bollywood style. Here is a list of movies
which an engineer must watch to celebrate their engineering:
3 Idiots (2009)
3 Idiots is a comedy drama film by the
director Rajkumar Hirani. The film stars Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sharman
Joshi, R. Madhavan, Parikshit Sahni, and Boman Irani. It sends out a strong
message on the Indian education system by an engineering institute –
highlighting college ragging, mania with high grades, and the death-defying
repercussions of parental demands on today’s college goers. The film is loosely
based on bestselling author Chetan Bhagat’s novel, Five Point Someone. The
story of the film showcased the lives of three engineering college friends who had
their share of fun coupled with drinking, flirting, and disappointments.
Lakshya (2004)
Lakshya is a war drama film directed by
Farhan Akhtar. The film stars Hrithik Roshan, Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan,
Sharad Kapoor, Aditya Srivastava, Om Puri, and Boman Irani. The story of the
movie revolves around the Lieutenant Karan Shergill, who is confused about
himself in the beginning, eventually finds his lakshya and leads his squad to triumph over the Pakistani troops.
Lakshya is a film that gives an insight to everyone to be focused and follow
the right path in their life.
Rang De Basanti (2006)
Rang De Basanti is a Bollywood drama film
directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. The film has an ensemble star cast that
includes Aamir Khan, Siddharth Narayan, Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Kapoor, Madhavan,
Sharman Joshi, Alice Patten and Atul Kulkarni. The film is a journey of six college boys from college
students to the rebels. It presents a strong message that life is to celebrate
your freedom and introduces a genre of people who go laughing all the way of
their life journey. Overall, the film is a must watch for all the budding
engineers and get motivated for their future.
Robot (2010)
Robot is originally a Tamil sci-fi film
directed by S. Shankar, starring superstar Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
in lead roles. The story of the film revolves around a scientist’s invention, a
robot, which falls in love with the scientist’s girlfriend. The film presents
and showcases the hard-work done by a scientist and to dedicate his invention
for the service of mankind. It demonstrates a life time message to all the
engineers to work for their nation and their people. The film also carries
forward the man-machine clash with fascinating twists and turns and creates a
lovely love triangle between the trio – scientist Rajinikanth, medical student
Aishwarya and robot Rajinikanth.
Swades (2004)
Swades is a Bollywood drama film directed by
Lagaan famed Ashutosh Gowariker, starring Shah Rukh Khan in the role of a NASA
scientist and debutant Gayatri Joshi. The story of the film connects the people
in large with their roots and showcases a successful Indian scientist from NASA
who returns to his native place and reconnects with his childhood friend. The
film has spread a strong message across the nation with its story line and the
problem of brain drain. Today’s youth from all the fields including engineering
can very well connect themselves in the similar situation and get the boost to
return their due to the country.
Udaan (2010)
Udaan is a film that represents the saying,
‘Give wings to your dreams’. The film is directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and
is loosely based on the real life of renowned director Anurag Kashyap. The
story of the film revolves around a teen age boy Rohan, who has been expelled from
his boarding school and is forced to come back to his place, Jamshedpur to live
with his bossy father, who ill-treats
him and does not support his dreams to become a writer by forcing him to study
engineering and work at his steel plant. Udaan is all about chasing your dreams
and living your life to the fullest despite everything. It celebrates the supremacy
of the human spirit, showing that we can fly sky high and fulfill our most
impossible dreams just by believing in ourselves and beckon the courage to
fight for our happiness.
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)
Zoya
created the buzz in director’s list with a rocking movie Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara starring Farhan Akhtar
accompanying an ensemble cast that includes Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, Abhay
Deol, Kalki Koechlin and Ariadna Cabrol. Although the movie deals with very
deep topics like marriage, love and Work, it never feels like getting bore due
to the awe-inspiring comedy with light mood. The film is a great inspiration for
all the working engineers and depicts a strong message to live the life to the
fullest.
Dil Chahta Hai (2001)
Dil
Chahta Hai is a fantastic film by the debutant director Farhan Akhtar, both in
direction and script writing. The film stars an ensemble cast which includes
Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni and
Dimple Kapadia. The story of the film revolves around three best buddies, their
relationships and their so-called personal lives. Although the guys are blessed
with totally diverse natures and with different meanings of life, the only
thing that keeps them bind together is their un-ending friendship. The film is
so real and moving that every time we plan a similar kind of trip after
watching it.
RHTDM (2001)
The must watch movie for every engineer is
directed by Gautham Menon, starring R.Madhavan, Diya Mirza and Saif Ali Khan.
It was a remake of the well known Tamil film Minnale. The film was a box office flop at the time of
its release but still memorable for its soundtrack and music. The comic scenes of the film
are excellent. Madhavan possesses an unusual comedy touch and is equally
supported by another superb character in the film, Vicky, whose one-liners steals
the show and makes it a cult movie.
Pyaar Ka Panchnama (2011)
A fresh take on gen-Y relationships,
Pyaar Ka Punchnama is directed by Luv Ranjan and has showcased the lives of
three urban couples as Kartik Tiwari and Nushrat Bharucha, Divyendu Sharma and
Ishita Sharma and Rayo Bakhirta and Sonalli Sehgall. The movie is made for a low
budget of Rs 7 crore and turned out to be a gainer by earning Rs 12 crore at
the box office. It has, since then, achieved offbeat status among Indian youth.
